Completing Incomplete Revealed Preference under Limited Attention

چکیده
This paper discusses how to improve the identification of the preference of a decision maker (DM) with limited attention proposed by Masatlioglu, Nakajima, and Ozbay (2012). Their identification method relies on choice reversals so the obtained revealed preference is often very incomplete. We propose three approaches to address this problem. The first one is accommodating to a model-free approach, which respects DM’s choice in making a welfare analysis, as long as it does not contradict MNO’s revealed preference. The second is to incorporate exogenously obtained decision maker’s attention/inattention information into MNO’s model. The third one is to take framings that influence DM’s attention into effect for the identification. JEL Classification Numbers: D11, D60, D81.

Revealed Attention
The standard revealed preference argument relies on an implicit assumption that a decision maker considers all feasible alternatives. However, the marketing and psychology literatures provide well-established evidence that consumers do not consider all brands in a given market before making a purchase (Limited Attention). In this paper, we illustrate how one can deduce both the decision maker’s...

In this article, we propose a method to deal with incomplete interval-valuedhesitant fuzzy preference relations. For this purpose, an additivetransitivity inspired technique for interval-valued hesitant fuzzypreference relations is formulated which assists in estimating missingpreferences. First of all, we introduce a condition for decision makersproviding incomplete information. Decision maker...

Methods for dealing with incomplete preference information in hierarchical weighting models have continued to attract attention in the literature on multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). In this paper, we give a structured overview of several such methods which (i) accommodate incomplete preference information, (ii) offer dominance concepts and decision rules for the generation of decision r...
متن کاملA Representation Theorem for General Revealed Preference
Following Richter (1966), we provide criteria under which a preference relation implied by a finite set of choice observations has a complete extension that can in turn be represented by a utility function. These criteria rely on a mapping over preference relations, the rational closure, which is a generalization of the transitive closure and is employed to construct the complete extension. We ...
متن کاملAmendment Voting with Incomplete Preferences : A Revealed Preference Approach to Robust Identification ∗
We study the outcome of the amendment voting procedure based on a potentially incomplete preference relation. A decision-maker evaluates candidates in a list and iteratively updates her choice by comparing the status-quo to the next candidate. She favors the status-quo when the two candidates are incomparable according to her underlying preference. Developing a revealed preference approach, we ...
